What Colors Should I Wear for My Senior Pictures?

What Colors Should I Wear for My Senior Pictures?

One of the most common questions I get when it comes to prepping for a photo session is: what color clothing should I wear for my photo session?

While there are some general rules of thumb to use – no fluorescent colors, consider a piece of clothing with a color that “pops,” etc. – I have always been a bit stumped by this question. I’ve found that while some colors work great on some people, those same colors can wash other people out, making them look sickly and/or pale in photos.

Enter: color analysis!

If you’ve never heard of color analysis (also referred to as personal color analysis, or seasonal color analysis), it essentially is a tool for determining your best colors based on your own features (skin, hair, eyes, etc.). Each person generally falls into one of four larger categories (winter, spring, autumn, or summer), which are then further broken down into more specific palettes (i.e., deep winter, cool winter, bright winter, light summer, soft autumn, warm spring, etc.). With each of these seasons (and sub seasons) comes a specific array of colors that help a person “pop” (for lack of a better word!).

You can imagine that when it comes to photos, everyone wants to “pop!” We all want to look our best when we are having professional photos taken. And while I could recommend a few specific colors for people to dress in for their photos, I think there is a lot more value in steering people towards the concept of color analysis, and discovering what their best colors are that will make them pop!

I can’t claim to be a professional color analyst (or even a mediocre one at best!) so I’ve compiled some resources below for those who are interested in discovering what their best colors are! As well as a few simple tips to use if you don’t want to go through the whole color analysis process.

First, below is a link to a great comprehensive video for finding your “season” and your best colors!

If you’re looking for a quick way to determine your best colors, here’s what I would suggest:

Find a wide variety of different colors of clothing/fabrics (they don’t have to be yours - go through the closets of your family members, find blankets/scraps of fabric), and sit in front of a mirror (make sure you don’t have any makeup on and that your hair is down). Simply hold up those fabrics right beneath your face, covering your chest and collar bone area. Pay close attention to what colors enhance your features, and what colors wash you out. It may not be completely obvious to you at first, especially if you don’t have lots of different colors in different shades.

If you are struggling to find a wide variety of different colors of fabrics, you can also head to a store and simply hold different colors of fabric up in front of the mirror. Pay close attention to what colors lift your features, and what colors wash you out… then be sure to take note and buy clothing that corresponds!

Obviously, this isn’t a true test for determining your best “season” and true color analysis, but I do hope it is helpful in finding the best colors to suit YOU for your photo session! I’ve also included some photos below of some seniors who I think knocked it out of the park with their color choices!

(PS - there are also some pretty great filters on TikTok that will give you lots of color samples to help you find what suits you best!)

5 Location Ideas in Butler County, Pennsylvania for Senior Photos

If you’re looking for photo location ideas within the Butler County area for senior pictures, you’ve come to the right place! You don’t have to drive far to find beautiful backdrops for your senior photos, whether you go to Seneca Valley High School, Mars High School, Portersville Christian Academy or Butler Area High School!

Below, you’ll find five of my favorite Buttler County photo spots. This post is specifically geared towards senior photos, so I’ll be sharing some of my favorite photos I’ve taken at each location, as well as any other pertinent information!

If you have any questions about any of these locations, feel free to reach out to me directly at jhidingerphotography@gmail.com. And if you are in need of some senior photos at any one of these locations, I would love to work with you! I am a local resident of Butler County and know all of these locations so well!

1. MORAINE STATE PARK SENIOR PHOTOS

A beautiful, nature-centric location in Butler County for senior portraits is Moraine State Park! Moraine features a large lake, docks, forest, trails, fields, and even small beaches, all of which make for a scenic location for senior pictures.

Moraine State Park looks beautiful at all times of year, but especially so in the fall when all of the leaves are changing! This park is open to the public and doesn’t require any reservation to take photos there.

2. SUCCOP NATURE PARK SENIOR PHOTOS

Succop Nature Park is situated right near the Butler Airport, and has lots of variety in terms of background for photos! There is a historic building with white brick and black and red accents on the property, as well as a small old greenhouse and newly updated white and red barn. There are brick accents, as well as a willow tree and pond!

Succop Nature Park is open to the public and doesn’t require reservations to take photos there. However, they do host weddings and events on their property, so if you hope to take photos there on a weekend, you might want to call the park office to see if there are any events planned. They will ask you to leave if they see you on the property!

3. HISTORIC HARMONY SENIOR PHOTOS

This location is a long time favorite of mine for senior photos in Butler County! It’s a great location for Seneca Valley seniors, since it’s located very close to the high school.

Historic Harmony is a small German town established in the 1800’s that has been updated with brightly colored walls and the most adorable shops and restaurants (if you have a chance to visit, my favorite spots are Wunderbar and Two Fraus Bakery!). There are an UNLIMITED number of locations for photos here! Buildings, fences, bridges, nature, a barn, a field - you name it, it’s probably here!

The one caveat with Historic Harmony is that you have to know where you are allowed to shoot, and where you are not allowed to shoot. Many of the buildings are owned privately and don’t take kindly to people shooting on their property, so it’s best to check with them beforehand if you have specific spots in mind that you want to use. You can also contact the Harmony Museum, who owns some of the buildings in town (including the barn) to retrieve a day pass photo permit (currently priced at $20 per shoot/day as of January 2022). This is a fee I take care of for my clients who want to shoot there because I love the location so much!

4. ZELIENOPLE SENIOR PHOTOS

A favorite location for getting an urban vibe without having to go into Pittsburgh! Zelienople is a small town located in Butler County that has exploded within the last couple of years! It’s just north of Cranberry Township and has LOTS of variety to offer for photo locations.

In addition to senior photos below, I’ve also included some maternity photos I’ve shot here so you’re able to see added location variety! Zelienople is situated right next to Historic Harmony (from above). You could easily use both locations in one senior photo session!

5. ADAMS TOWNSHIP COMMUNITY PARK SENIOR PHOTOS

Located in Mars, Adams Township Park has a small variety of locations for senior portraits! It’s a great location for Mars High School seniors, as it’s only a few minute drive from the high school.

Daniel R: North Shore Senior Photographer

I couldn't have picked a more perfect day for Daniel's senior portraits, taken on the North Shore. The sun was shining, the weather was not-too-hot, not-too-cold, and there were barely any crowds around the area - surprising, for such a beautiful November day!

As a side note, I love when high school senior guys take an interest in their senior portraits. It's so much fun to work together to create dynamic images that showcase interests, likes, and personality. For instance, Daniel has a love for the city, so of course, we decided to take his photos in an urban setting that showcased Pittsburgh's iconic yellow bridges and skyline. Daniel is also a member of his high school's lacrosse varsity team and has played sports for the majority of his life, so incorporating in the different sport-themed backgrounds dotting the North Shore really helped enhance the overall look of his images.

Thanks for a great session, Daniel! I had so much fun creating these images with you. Congratulations on your last year of school!

Jacob M: North Shore Senior Photography

There are so many things I love about photographing people on Pittsburgh's North Shore. The mean reason: so much diversity! I love being able to photograph my subjects in so many different environments and settings, all within a short walking distance. Between the Andy Warhol bridge, the river, and PNC Park, you really can't go wrong with a North Shore session. Here are a few of my favorites from Jacob's senior shoot!

Sam T. | Strand Theater Senior Photography

Sam is a sweet Seneca Valley senior with a love for musical theater and coffee (my kind of girl)! Sam's mom rented the Strand TheaterStrand Theater in Zelienople for her session - we had such a great time shooting there and around historic Harmony.

Also, a huge thanks to my friend Megan Johnson for personalizing the sign of this first photo. (Click here to see more of her awesome design work).

Jo H. | North Park Senior Session

You might recognize the lovely Jo from her sibling session a few months back (see it here). We had so much fun hanging out at North Park taking Jo's senior photos - she even brought her pom pons and a bag full of her dance shoes for us to incorporate into the shoot! 2014-05-12_0001.jpg 2014-05-12_0002.jpg 2014-05-12_0003.jpg 2014-05-12_0004.jpg 2014-05-12_0007.jpg 2014-05-12_0008.jpg 2014-05-12_0009.jpg 2014-05-12_0005.jpg 2014-05-12_0006.jpg

Kyle C. | Zelienople Senior Session

Kyle is a 2014 Seneca Valley senior, and we had an awesome time shooting his portraits this past week in the little town of Zelienople. He's a member of Seneca's ROTC program, and can hold himself up by his own strength parallel to the ground (see the last photo). Thanks for an awesome shoot, Kyle! 2014-05-09_0001.jpg 2014-05-09_0011.jpg 2014-05-09_0010.jpg 2014-05-09_0009.jpg 2014-05-09_0003.jpg 2014-05-09_0008.jpg 2014-05-09_0006.jpg 2014-05-09_0004.jpg 2014-05-09_0005.jpg 2014-05-09_0007.jpg
