Abby & Austin: Mellon Park Engagement Photos

Abby & Austin currently live in Seattle, but came back to Abby's home town of Pittsburgh for their engagement session just a few weeks ago!

These two are super smart and super fun to be around! It was so easy to tell how much they love, admire, and respect each other just from the 90 minutes we were privileged to spend with them. And that made taking their photos so, so easy!

Mellon Park was looking extra beautiful the night of their session, too, with the most beautiful light! It is always a great go-to at any time of year for a variety of backdrops… it is it’s own little oasis within the city!

Congratulations on your engagement, Abby & Austin! We cannot wait for your wedding day later this year!!!

Martha & Sam: Sunrise Mellon Park Engagement Photos

An empty Mellon Park can be tough to come by... unless you have your session at 6:30AM on a Saturday!

Martha & Sam are two brave souls who woke up extra early a beautiful summer Saturday for their gorgeous sunrise engagement session! And I know that sounds crazy, but it was SO worth it. We had the most beautiful morning light, and if you’re local to the Pittsburgh area and have ever been to Mellon Park on a week day or weekend evening... you know how crazy this park gets with photo sessions! So it was a treat to get to meander our way through the park without people!

Martha & Sam met a few years ago through their bible study group while they were both in college. Sam proposed at Kennywood (a true Pittsburgh proposal if you ask me!), as a nod towards their mutual love for theme parks. And they were a joy to spend an early morning with!

Congratulations to you both, Martha & Sam! We are so excited to be a part of your wedding day!!!

Maria & Matt: Spring Mellon Park Engagement Photos

If you are a Disney fan, you’re going to love this blog post! But even if you’re not a Disney can, I think you’ll still enjoy the sweetness of Maria & Matt’s colorful Spring, Up-movie-inspired engagement session!

If you’re unfamiliar with the movie “Up,” its beginning centers around two characters named Carl & Ellie, who meet as young children, become friends, fall in love, and get married. There are many twists and turns throughout the movie (I won’t ruin it for you if you haven’t seen it! ;) ), but two of the main visual features include a colorful set of balloons, and an “Adventure book” where Carl & Ellie store their past, current, and future adventures.

In representation of the movie, Maria & Matt brought both of those things with them to their engagement session, just for a subtle nod to the movie they love so - which they will also be using as style inspiration for their wedding day! As a major Disney fan myself, I had so much fun incorporating these small elements into their photos and cannot WAIT to photograph their wedding day!

Besides loving Disney, Maria & Matt love spending time visiting new places and exploring their home town area of D.C. They are both extremely family-oriented, and their love and adoration for each other is so very apparent in the way they interact with one another! One of my favorite things I learned about their story is how Matt first pursued Maria, before they were even dating! He drove FOUR HOURS just to be able to go on a date with her. Talk about commitment!

Spoiler alert: I have known Matt since he was a kid - our families lived across from one another for quite a few years! To be able to photograph people I know or have known - past and present - is such a gift. Seeing people grow, transform, and find the love of their life is something incredibly fulfilling. And Maria, you are such a gem! I am so thankful that we have been able to connect during this exciting season in both of your lives.

And with that - enjoy a few of my favorites from Maria & Matt’s engagement session! I have WAY too many favorites from this one!

Kayla & Michael: Mellon Park Anniversary Photos

Awwww, this is a special one! You may have seen these two on the blog before, if you’ve been following along for a few years! I’ve photographed Kayla & Michael twice before - once for their engagement photos, and once on their wedding day! I was so totally honored when Kayla emailed me, asking if I would be interested in taking their anniversary photos. Of COURSE I would be!

If you click through those blog posts above, you’ll notice a theme: rain. Oh yes, it rained for both their engagement session AND their wedding photos. Oh my, did I pray for no rain for this anniversary session! I desperately wanted these two to have a rain-free, bright, sunny day for their anniversary session.

Well… while we did end up with a beautiful night, it only came after we had to reschedule once due to… you guessed it… rain! I swear, my heart broke into a million tiny little pieces when I saw the monsoon of a forecast for the date we had scheduled originally for their anniversary photos (I know, not dramatic at all ;) ). The weather feels like one of the toughest parts of my job, because it so greatly affects my scheduled sessions, but I have zero control over it!

Anyways, thankfully, Kayla & Michael are kind & gracious, so we were able to reschedule to a later date! And we even got some SUNLIGHT for the second half of our time together 👏 Booya!

Since I had photographed these two before, I knew they were pros in front of the camera, which really helped us take advantage of SO much of what Mellon Park has to offer! Gates, architecture, gardens, a fountain… oh my! It truly just felt like we were hanging out with old friends. Because we were! 💛 Getting to photograph my couples, seniors, and families in their next stages of life is always one of my all-time favorite things!

Kayla and Michael, congratulations on your MANY years together. We are so thankful for you two, your hearts, and just for who you are. 💛

Also… if you’re wondering where Kayla’s fabulous red dress is from, she found it on Shein!

Sarah & Derek: Winter Wonderland Mellon Park Engagement Photos

Ohhhhh snow. As Pittsburghers, we have a love-hate relationship with it (and that spectrum of love/hate varies widely from person to person!), but this year, I (personally) found myself missing the snow for the first year in a while! Usually, by the time mid-February rolls around, I’m more than ready for it to be over - but, before Sarah and Derek’s shoot, I had only had one snowy session this year and was craving more!

Ironically enough, what initially kept Sarah, Derek and I from our first planned meeting was a crazy snow and ice storm a few months back - the roads were so bad that one of the roads I live on completely shut down, and it took me 2 hours to move 1.5 miles! Thankfully, these two were so gracious, and we planned to meet a few weeks later (fortunately, there was no snow this time around 😉)

For their engagement session, though, we were hoping and praying for some beautiful snow! Oddly enough, we didn’t see much snow in the month leading up to their session, and I was a little concerned that we weren’t going to have any snow to work with come February. All we had really been getting was LOTS of precipitation that was just warm enough to not be snow - ick!

But then, we had the most beautiful snow storm the day before their session - just in the nick of time! And then - on top of that - when we showed up the day of their session, it was lightly snowing. And it lightly snowed for almost their ENTIRE 90 minute engagement session! I’m not sure we could have planned it any better if we had tried - but it all ended up working out exactly how we had hoped!!!

But, enough about the weather - what you really need to know after reading this blog post is how absolutely INCREDIBLE these two are! So here’s a little more about them: Sarah and Derek met on Twitter and connected over a mutual love for math. At the time, Sarah was considering going for her PhD in mathematical studies, and Derek was(is) working towards his! He offered to give her an insight into the process, and, well - now they’re engaged to be married! They have a puppy named Louisa, share a mutual love for Qdoba (over Chipotle and Moe’s!), and - maybe one of my favorite fun facts - their wedding date was chosen specifically for its mathematical reference to the Fibonacci Sequence! I mean, come on - aren’t these two just the cutest?!

Their engagement session was nothing short of easy, breezy, and way too much fun! I could photograph these two every weekend, and I’m already counting down the months until I get to photograph them again! Congratulations, Sarah and Derek - you two are just such a blessing to work with! I am so thankful for you!!! 💛

HD + Jeff: Oakland Engagement Photos

I had the pleasure of taking engagement photos for these two Pittsburgh-loving dog parents in August at two of my favorite locations in Oakland - the Mellon Institute columns, and Mellon Park! HD and Jeff have been together since 2012, and their little family consists of the two of them, plus their adorable pup, Zelda! Even though the threat of rain hung in the air throughout the night, it ended up being an absolutely beautiful evening - the perfect night for photos!

HD and Jeff, thank you for the honor of taking these photos for you! I can’t wait to celebrate your marriage in just over a month! 💛

The Story of How We Met

The Story of How We Met

I started attending Grace Community Church with my family when I was in eighth grade. I remember in particular visiting the Sunday after our school musical had ended – I always LOVED being a part of them, but for those of you who might’ve been involved in school musicals growing up, you know how exhausting they can be.

That Sunday after our musical ended, in particular, my parents decided to visit a church that we had visited a number of years ago – Grace Community Church. To be honest, I wasn’t excited. I was mad that I had to wake up so early after such a long week of late nights, but nevertheless, I pulled myself out of bed and we made it to the service… which ended up being pretty dang amazing.

Directly following the service, I met the youth pastor there, who introduced me to a girl a couple of years younger than me. Her name was Alisha, and it seemed like she knew everyone. I followed her around the lobby as she introduced me to tons of different people, finally stopping near the restroom where I met her mom and the rest of the members of her small group.

I remember thinking how kind she was. After that initial meeting, we talked a few more times, but didn’t hang out with each other too much.

Fast forward a year, and someone had convinced this shy introvert to go down to Panama City Beach, Florida to a camp called “Bigstuf” with the rest of the youth group. I had one close friend who went to the same youth group at the time, so when she decided to go, I decided to go, too. So we hopped on a bus with everyone else and drove down.

I kid you not, that camp changed my life. It changed the way I saw God. It opened my eyes to the things I needed so desperately to change in my life and opened up a new community of friendships to me (which, let’s be honest, for an introvert is like, one new person). But nonetheless – I was making connections and I was excited!

The very last day of camp, we were all waiting while the guys were loading our bus to had back up to PA. Our youth pastor at the time must’ve seen me standing shyly on the edge of the group, so he came over and introduced me to one of the most extroverted people on the entire trip. He had long, red, Justin Bieber hair, tons of freckles, and was very sun burnt. “Nick,” he said to the boy with the red hair, “doesn’t Jenna look like Pam from ‘The Office?’” which I later learned was Nick’s favorite show.

Immediately, I felt put off. I didn’t like ‘The Office,’ and, at the time, meeting new people made me incredibly nervous. I smiled, chatted politely about how cool The Office was (I’ve never actually liked it!) and walked onto the bus. Nick and I ended up sitting near each other – we exchanged a few words to each other throughout the trip home, and even though he was kind of loud, I decided I liked this guy named Nick.

When I got home, I saw I had a message waiting from Nick on Facebook. It’s like he had read my mind – being the shy introvert that I was, I always loved getting to know people via messengers. That night, we talked until, like, two in the morning (and trust me, I’m not a girl who stays up late!). We talked about the camp and how God I worked in both of our lives. I remember, at the end of that conversation, thinking this is a guy I could actually see myself dating.

It’s amazing to see how all of the dots were connected from my very first day at Grace. Alisha, the very first person I had met at Grace, I later found out was Nick’s sister. Thinking back to that small fact alone is such a testament to my heart – God was involved right from the very beginning. God does that – he whispers into the details of our lives to point us towards our future, even when we don’t know it. It reminds me of a story of Elijah:

“Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” (1 Kings 19:11-13)

I think it’s powerful when we can hear God whispering to us, but it’s just as powerful – and encouraging - when we can look back and see where God was whispering to us.

Hilary + Luke: Mellon Park Winter Engagement Photos

I am so excited to introduce you to this couple! Hilary and Luke drove in from Ohio for their engagement session and were absolute champs in Pittsburgh's freezing temps! We started off their session at Coffee Tree Roasters in Bakery Square, then made our way to (an empty) Mellon Park where we were able to catch some of that beautiful afternoon winter light.

Hilary brought a beeeautiful dusty blue skirt, which she had tailored from a previously used bridesmaid dress. Talk about some beautiful upcycling! The blue tones complimented the wintery backdrop perfectly. I can hardly wait to photograph Hilary and Luke's wedding in just a little over two months! ♥

Tessa's First Birthday: Mellon Park Family Photography

Can anyone believe it's JULY already?! I feel like I blinked and June was over! If there's one thing that gets me excited about summer, it's the beautiful golden light, especially in one of my favorite parks in Pittsburgh - Mellon Park!

I met up with sweet little Tessa and her parents for her first birthday, to celebrate with a photo session! This little lady loves to walk, hug, and hold car keys, and just has the sweetest personality (and the cutest curly hair!). Below are just a few of my favorites from this family session!
