Payton A: Seneca Valley High School Senior Photos at Mellon Park

As you might be able to tell from just the header image, we had THE most beautiful day for Payton’s senior photos at Mellon Park!

Payton is a sweet, bubbly senior who is graduating from Seneca Valley High School as a part of the Class of 2022! She is heading to the University of Tennessee in the fall (hence the orange baseball hat we incorporated into some of her photos!). She wanted lots of florals and some architecture in here photos, so Mellon Park was a lovely choice!

We started off our time together by hitting alllll of the pink blooming trees - which perfectly complimented her first dress (which I absolutely adored!) For her second outfit, she chose a white eyelet dress, which had the perfect amount of texture to add some visual interest to her photos.

Congratulations on your senior year, Payton! ❤️ Thank you for the honor of taking these images for you to celebrate!

As a note: for those looking to have beautiful spring blooms in their photos, the last few days of April and the first week of May is the ideal time to book (of course, this can vary slightly year to year depending on early Spring weather)!

Julia E: Phipp's Conservatory Broderie Room Senior Photos

Say hello to Miss Julia, who is a part of the class of 2022! Julia plans on studying Psychology after high school, and has such a sweet spirit! She loves reading, writing, and baking.

It was such a treat to be able to photograph Julia a few weeks ago at Phipp's Conservatory in the Broderie Room! If you didn’t know, the Broderie Room at Phipp’s is modeled after a formal French garden, and (in my opinion) it’s easily one of the most beautiful rooms they have!

Phipp’s ended up working out perfectly for Julia’s senior portrait session - her photos needed to be completed with enough time to use them for senior announcements this summer, so they couldn’t be scheduled too late into the Spring. But Julia also wanted some beautiful greens and florals as a backdrop, which usually begin to pop up in the Spring timeframe. So when I suggested renting a room at Phipp’s for her senior photos, I was so excited when she and her mom jumped on the opportunity!

Did you know that you can actually rent a room at Phipp’s? It’s true! Click here to find out more about a room rental at Phipp’s. A room rental at Phipp’s might be a great idea for a senior session for you if…

  • You don’t want to have to worry about inclement weather the day of your shoot! Phipp’s is a covered, enclosed greenhouse, making it a great indoor option - which would mean that you wouldn’t have to worry about rain, cold, or snow!

  • You want to have a more private space for your session. Public spaces & parks can be busy during the summer months. Phipp’s is a private space where people won’t be able to interrupt!

Renting a room is actually the only way to have a professional photo session take place there (just so you know!). But it really is a fantastic option, even a great backup rain plan!

Congratulations on your senior year, Julia! It was such an honor to celebrate this season with you!

5 Location Ideas in Butler County, Pennsylvania for Senior Photos

If you’re looking for photo location ideas within the Butler County area for senior pictures, you’ve come to the right place! You don’t have to drive far to find beautiful backdrops for your senior photos, whether you go to Seneca Valley High School, Mars High School, Portersville Christian Academy or Butler Area High School!

Below, you’ll find five of my favorite Buttler County photo spots. This post is specifically geared towards senior photos, so I’ll be sharing some of my favorite photos I’ve taken at each location, as well as any other pertinent information!

If you have any questions about any of these locations, feel free to reach out to me directly at jhidingerphotography@gmail.com. And if you are in need of some senior photos at any one of these locations, I would love to work with you! I am a local resident of Butler County and know all of these locations so well!

1. MORAINE STATE PARK SENIOR PHOTOS

A beautiful, nature-centric location in Butler County for senior portraits is Moraine State Park! Moraine features a large lake, docks, forest, trails, fields, and even small beaches, all of which make for a scenic location for senior pictures.

Moraine State Park looks beautiful at all times of year, but especially so in the fall when all of the leaves are changing! This park is open to the public and doesn’t require any reservation to take photos there.

If you are interested in seeing more photos from Moraine State Park, check out the full photo sessions below!

2. SUCCOP NATURE PARK SENIOR PHOTOS

Succop Nature Park is situated right near the Butler Airport, and has lots of variety in terms of background for photos! There is a historic building with white brick and black and red accents on the property, as well as a small old greenhouse and newly updated white and red barn. There are brick accents, as well as a willow tree and pond!

Succop Nature Park is open to the public and doesn’t require reservations to take photos there. However, they do host weddings and events on their property, so if you hope to take photos there on a weekend, you might want to call the park office to see if there are any events planned. They will ask you to leave if they see you on the property!

3. HISTORIC HARMONY SENIOR PHOTOS

This location is a long time favorite of mine for senior photos in Butler County! It’s a great location for Seneca Valley seniors, since it’s located very close to the high school.

Historic Harmony is a small German town established in the 1800’s that has been updated with brightly colored walls and the most adorable shops and restaurants (if you have a chance to visit, my favorite spots are Wunderbar and Two Fraus Bakery!). There are an UNLIMITED number of locations for photos here! Buildings, fences, bridges, nature, a barn, a field - you name it, it’s probably here!

The one caveat with Historic Harmony is that you have to know where you are allowed to shoot, and where you are not allowed to shoot. Many of the buildings are owned privately and don’t take kindly to people shooting on their property, so it’s best to check with them beforehand if you have specific spots in mind that you want to use. You can also contact the Harmony Museum, who owns some of the buildings in town (including the barn) to retrieve a day pass photo permit (currently priced at $20 per shoot/day as of January 2022). This is a fee I take care of for my clients who want to shoot there because I love the location so much!

4. ZELIENOPLE SENIOR PHOTOS

A favorite location for getting an urban vibe without having to go into Pittsburgh! Zelienople is a small town located in Butler County that has exploded within the last couple of years! It’s just north of Cranberry Township and has LOTS of variety to offer for photo locations.

In addition to senior photos below, I’ve also included some maternity photos I’ve shot here so you’re able to see added location variety! Zelienople is situated right next to Historic Harmony (from above). You could easily use both locations in one senior photo session!

If you are interested in seeing more photos from zelienople, check out the full photo sessions below!

5. ADAMS TOWNSHIP COMMUNITY PARK SENIOR PHOTOS

Located in Mars, Adams Township Park has a small variety of locations for senior portraits! It’s a great location for Mars High School seniors, as it’s only a few minute drive from the high school.

Good old Hartwood Acres… it was good to be back after a few month hiatus!

Dylan is a North Catholic senior who's graduating as a part of the class of 2021. He's a fan of Chick-fil-A, Chipotle, and - fun fact - works at Giant Eagle and is a wicked fast shopper (the fastest at his store!). Congrats on your senior year, Dylan! Thanks for the honor of taking your senior photos!

Quentin H: North Shore Senior Photos

The day of Quentin’s senior session was one of the first sunny days we had had in a WHILE here in Pittsburgh, which made it the perfect day for his session!

I had the pleasure of photographing Quentin’s sister, Morgan (click here to see her photos!) in November of 2017, and let me tell you - that was a cold session! Temperatures dipped into the single digits (if I remember correctly!) and the only warm location at Hartwood Acres was the restroom! So… we ended up doing a few portraits in there against a white wall, just to give Morgan a break from the cold! Thankfully, Quentin’s session was just a bit warmer 😉 Sunny with a high of 75 isn’t too bad!

Quentin is going to be a senior at North Allegheny this fall! He wore his baseball jersey for the first part of the session, and the surrounding area of PNC park was the perfect location! Paired with a Pirates hat, glove, and baseball, we were able to tie in the sport he’s played since he was four. Congratulations on making it to your senior year, Quentin! You are going to do great things!

I had the pleasure of taking Caleb’s senior photos on his family’s property just a few weeks ago! Why go anywhere else for photos when you have the most picturesque scenery right in your backyard?! My favorite thing I learned about Caleb during our session is that he works for a pizza shop and gets to MAKE pizza for his job! Not sure why, but that’s something I have ALWAYS wanted to do!

Caleb, it was such an honor to take these photos for you! I hope you have a great rest of your senior year! ☺️

What Disney's Boardwalk Taught Me About Grace

What Disney's Boardwalk Taught Me About Grace

Shortly after our honeymoon in Disney, Nick and I started waking up and asking each other “do you want to go to Disney today?” It’s a little inside joke we have – every day feels like a good day to go to Disney, but one day in February of 2018, the answer was finally a “yes” – we were actually going to Disney!

Nick had surprised me with my first stay ever on Disney property for our honeymoon at Disney’s Boardwalk Inn. We stayed in a corner room and could see fireworks from both Hollywood Studios AND Epcot from our balcony. It was stinking EPIC.

Honestly, I thought we would never stay at the Boardwalk again. A friend of ours who worked for Disney had been incredibly kind to help Nick get an amazing discount on our room for our honeymoon. But, low and behold, since our honeymoon we’ve stayed there twice more, but our third visit is what brings these words to you today.

After spending some time with family and friends at a house in Orlando, Nick and I decided we wanted to stay at the Boardwalk for a couple of nights, just the two of us, as a birthday/Christmas/Valentine’s/anniversary gift (gotta do what you gotta do to get back to Disney!). We decided a few years into our relationship that we’d rather gift each other experiences with one another than objects, so this was one of those experiences we couldn’t wait to share (again)! I think, out of the two, experiences tend to build a stronger relational foundation than any sort of gift might.

We chose the smallest, most inexpensive room – we just love the experience of being on Disney property (and being within walking distance to the parks was a bonus, too!!), and checked in on Nick’s birthday, which, for Nick, was probably one of the best birthday gifts he’s ever received.

2018-03-15_0011.jpg

We checked in a couple of hours before our “official” 3PM check in (well – actually 5 hours before!), so we had a LOT of time to kill. We hadn’t really planned anything special for Nick’s birthday (besides checking into the Boardwalk!), so while Nick went to grab a drink, I slyly made my way to concierge service desk to ask if they could help. I explained that it was my husband’s birthday, that his favorite place ever is the Boardwalk, and asked if she might be able to give me some ideas for things around the Boardwalk we could do for his birthday while we wait.

The woman smiled, gave me a couple of suggestions, and said that she would have someone send a birthday card to his room – which I knew he would absolutely love! She also took our name and reservation number - so she knew where to send the card, I assumed.

About an hour later, we received a message that our room was ready. We were both confused – we had stayed at the Boardwalk before, and never had we ever been able to check into our room so early. Regardless, we went, picked up our luggage, and headed off to our room. At first – we couldn’t find it. We went through one hall of rooms, down a set of stairs, and outdoors, wondering if they had made a mistake.

After a few more steps, we spotted a little mailbox that had our number on it. Behind the mailbox was an archway with a fence and a little courtyard with some of the most beautifully manicured flower gardens I’d ever seen. We exchanged a glance of confusion and excitement, muttering that “there must be some mistake!” but when we got to the French doors, past the garden, and tried our keys – the most insane thing happened. They worked. The door opened.

We swung open the door to find a beautiful, two story room – Disney music softly playing in the background, natural light pouring in through the large windows hanging above our heads. My first thought was that they had gotten something wrong. We had stayed in the cheapest room at the Boardwalk before and it in NO WAY resembled this masterpiece, with a living room, kitchenette, staircase, master bedroom, and master bathroom with a Jacuzzi. Concerned that there had a been a mistake and that we would somehow have to pay full price for this immaculate suite, Nick called the front desk to confirm that we had the correct room number.

The kind voice on the other line assured us that while we had payed for the smallest, cheapest room – but somehow we had been given this suite and were meant to enjoy it. While Nick was on the phone, I started looking up how much this type of suite usually costs. The answer: about four to five times (per night) what we actually paid for it. We were both FLOORED. We had heard of “Disney magic” before and of cast members doing incredibly kind things for random guests, but we had never ever expected to experience this sort of kindness. My mind immediately went back to the woman in concierge who had taken our names and reservation number, and I knew it must’ve been her – it couldn’t have been anyone else! I tried multiple times during our trip to go back and find her to thank her, but I couldn’t find her. She just seemed to have disappeared.

To make things even crazier, we found out that with this room came something called “club level service,” which basically means that we were able to visit and utilize a particular room in the hotel that served complimentary breakfast, lunch, dinner, wine, beer, espresso, and dessert – all for free. Like, are you kidding me?!

As we filled up our plates that first night, it dawned on me: we don’t deserve this. We don’t deserve any of this. We haven’t paid for it, we hadn’t planned for it, and we were able to tell pretty quickly that we were certainly of a much different crowd than those who normally frequented “the club.” Someone had gifted a youth pastor and a photographer from Pittsburgh one of the best, most undeserved vacations that we had ever had – for nothing. There’s nothing we could’ve done to earn it, and there’s no price we could’ve paid for it. And then it dawned on me – this is exactly what God’s grace is like.

It’s undeserved. There’s nothing we can do to earn it, and the price has already been paid for it. And it doesn’t have anything with who we are. It has everything to do with who God is. Truthfully, there’s no way we could’ve upgraded ourselves with money or with position, because in the eyes of Disney, we didn’t have either (haha!). But because of grace – because someone gave us something we in no way deserved – we were able to experience an amazing gift that cost us nothing.

That’s what Jesus calls us to every day. All he wants is for us to accept the gift he’s already laid before us. That’s why we celebrate Easter, for Pete’s sake – because Jesus died a death he didn’t deserve, so we could live a life we don’t deserve. But only because Jesus makes us worthy, because of the grace he’s given to us.

As I started to eat my free dinner, tears started streaming down my face. I felt so humbled in and by the face of grace of the woman who had been so kind, but so much moreso by the God who has given me this life – this gift – no strings attached.

Oakmont Country Club was the perfect backdrop for Justin's senior photos - especially being a golfer himself! The club is known as the "oldest top-ranked golf course in the United States," and was established in 1903. With lots of charm and classic decor, Oakmont provided ample opportunity for unique imagery - and Justin was a pro in front of the camera! Congratulations on your last year of school, Justin!

Chance's senior session took place at his family's home in Baden, near Cranberry Township. I loved that we had the opportunity to incorporate some of Chance's hobbies and interests into his photos, including his motorcycle, his love of hunting, and a fire pit (that was a first for me, but I love how the photos turned out!!). We had a great time working with you, Chance!

Josie H: Hartwood Acres Senior Photos

I love all of my clients, but it's especially fun to photograph people I've known for an extended period of time - people like Josie! Josie and I grew up in the same neighborhood - actually, almost right across the street from each other, though quite a few years apart in age! If you've been following the blog for a while, you might recognize the similarities between Josie and her sister, Sami, whose senior photos I took almost three years ago (talk about the great genes that run in their family!!).

For Josie's Hartwood Acres Mansion senior summer session, we incorporated a few different styles of outfits to showcase her personality! We went from dressier to more casual, ending with a few in her volleyball t-shirt (with a matching volleyball, of course!) and Josie totally killed it with every look - by the end of her session, she was a pro, even suggesting some of her own ideas for posing and movement (which I love!!).

Check out a few favorites from her session below!
