Senior Photo Trends: How They've Evolved Over the Years

Senior photos have come a long way from the stiff poses and standard backdrops of the past. Today, they’re a vibrant, creative celebration of individuality and style. As a Pittsburgh senior photographer, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing these exciting changes firsthand. Here are some of the biggest trends we’ve seen in recent years:

1. Natural Settings Over Studio Backdrops

Gone are the days when studio portraits were the norm. Now, seniors are stepping outside and embracing natural settings. From the lush greenery of Frick Park to the industrial charm of Pittsburgh’s Strip District, outdoor shoots provide dynamic and personalized backdrops that add life and depth to photos.

2. Lifestyle Photography

Today’s senior photos feel more like lifestyle shoots. The focus is on capturing authentic moments rather than overly posed portraits. Think laughing on a park bench, walking down a city street, or even grabbing a coffee at your favorite local cafe. These candid, real-life vibes create images that truly reflect your personality.

3. Personalization is Key

Seniors want their photos to tell their unique story, and photographers are getting creative to make it happen. Whether it’s incorporating hobbies, pets, or favorite outfits, personalization has become a cornerstone of modern senior photography. Love basketball? Let’s hit the court. Passionate about music? Bring your instrument along for the session.

4. Creative Wardrobe Choices

Fashion has taken center stage in senior photo trends. Seniors are showcasing their personal style with bold outfits, statement pieces, and multiple wardrobe changes. From casual jeans and sneakers to elegant dresses or sharp suits, the options are endless. Coordinating colors and textures with the location is also a popular way to create cohesive and visually stunning shots.

5. Incorporating Urban and Industrial Backdrops

Cities like Pittsburgh offer a perfect blend of natural beauty and urban grit, and seniors are taking advantage. Industrial backdrops, colorful murals, and cityscapes have become increasingly popular, adding an edgy and modern twist to traditional portraits.

6. Golden Hour Magic

The golden hour (just after sunrise or before sunset) has become a coveted time for senior shoots. The soft, warm light during this time creates a dreamy and flattering glow that enhances every photo. It’s a simple yet powerful way to make photos stand out.

7. Themed Sessions

Themed senior sessions have been gaining popularity as well. Whether it’s a vintage vibe, a boho aesthetic, or a nod to a favorite movie or book, themes help seniors express their passions in a fun and creative way.

8. Focus on Storytelling

Perhaps the biggest shift is the emphasis on storytelling. Senior photos are no longer just about how you look but about capturing who you are. From locations that hold personal significance to props that represent your journey, every detail is carefully curated to tell your unique story.

Historic Harmony Family Mini Photo Session

This sweet family has been in front of my lens a few times over the years, starting all the way back in 2018 for their wedding day! It is a joy and a privilege to get to photograph families throughout the years

These photos were taken in Historic Harmony - one of my favorite local Christmas backdrops! Caroline was a little trooper and so much fun to photograph.

Thank you, Kelly & Daniel, for letting me photograph your sweet family!

Meet this beautiful family of 8!

You may remember this family from their photo session last year... and what is so remarkable to me is that this family has been getting yearly family photos taken for 14 years now! Mom says it's her favorite day of the year, and I would think it just keeps getting more meaningful as her kids keep growing older.

I am truly amazed at the determination of mom (Elizabeth) - this was my first year getting my own family photos scheduled, outfits coordinated, making sure we were on time, etc. - and just with three people it was tough enough! Our own family photo experience has given me a whole new respect for families who set aside the time yearly (or bi-yearly, or really, EVER!) for family photos.

A big thanks to this family for inviting me to their home again for mom's favorite day of the year!

PS - if you aren't sure where to have your photos taken, your home/property is always a great choice! It's meaningful - and it's easier than packing everyone up in the car to drive to a separate location!

Delanie N: North Catholic High School Senior Photos

Meet Delanie!

Delanie is a North Catholic senior who wants to study neuroscience post high school! She loves science and math and had the BEST November day ever for her senior photos!

It's true, November can be a toss up for photos here in Pittsburgh... but when it's slightly warm and the sun is shining, the conditions are some of my favorite for photos. The light is just so beautiful... and we were even able to catch the tail end of some fall color for these portraits!

I am so excited to share more from this session. Congrats on your senior year, Delanie!

The Easiest Outfit Choice for Senior Pictures: The Little White Dress!

The Easiest Outfit Choice for Senior Pictures: The Little White Dress!

Deciding what to wear for senior pictures is no easy task, and sometimes it can be even tougher when us photographers recommend all kinds of different tips & tricks - try a pattern, but make sure it’s not too small! Wear a bright color, but make sure it’s not too fluorescent. Wear something you feel comfortable in, but make sure it’s also flattering!

While I do think all of those tips are important, I also think that sometimes it’s important to just have a few solid recommendations that anyone can follow. Enter: the white dress!

The “little white dress” (short white dress with short sleeves) has been trending in senior photos in recent years, and for good reason! There are so many reasons why a little white dress is a great choice for senior pictures.

IT PHOTOGRAPHS SO WELL

A white dress photographs beautifully, and white dresses come in all different styles, making them a flattering choice that helps the subject stand out from the background without being too in your face! The little white dress works with a variety of different backdrops (natural, urban, floral, historic, etc.) making it a great choice regardless of the location or background you choose for your photos!

IT’S CLASSIC & TIMELESS

White dresses are also classic & timeless. They may decrease or increase in popularity, but for the most part, they are a staple in many women’s wardrobes across generations.

…YET ALSO TRENDY

Right now, white dresses are so in for senior photos! So you have the added bonus of choosing a trendy piece for your senior session, while at the same time, having something that is so classic. It’s a win-win!

ALTERNATIVE IDEAS

Though the short white dress is what’s currently in, if you’re unsure if you want to go too trendy, try adding a twist to your white dress choice by:

  • Choosing a longer length instead of a shorter one

  • Choosing a dress with sleeves over something short sleeve

  • Adding a different color shoe (other than neutral or white)

  • Adding a different type of accessory

Below are a few of my seniors who have chosen the white dress option in recent years! Many of them purchased their dresses from Altar’d State or Francesca’s.

Pittsburgh Lifestyle Newborn Photos

Meet sweet Miss Eleanor!

I met Megan & Richard quite a few years ago, after they had gotten engaged to be married! I photographed their engagement session and their wedding day (in 2019), and I was super honored when they asked me if I would consider photographing their family as they transitioned to a family of three.

In the past, I've (frankly) turned away newborn sessions. If I'm being honest... it's because they scared me! Before having my own baby, I wasn't much of a "baby person" (as they say ). But after having my own and experiencing the newborn phase for myself... I softened to it. And I recognize that it is such a special, joyful, difficult, and emotionally charged time for families.

After Taylor Elizabeth Photography took our own in home newborn family photos in January of 2023 and recognized the gift those photos were to us, I found myself wanting to be able to do the same for other families.

So, truly - this family was a joy to photograph. They welcomed me into their home and we were able to capture some precious moments while Eleanor was still just a few weeks old!

Of course, the pups wanted to be involved in the photos… and of course we wanted to involve them! They are a part of the family, too ❤️

Besides the adorable onesie and adorable crib sheets, Megan & Richard included a special pillow that they had purchased on their honeymoon, specifically for the purpose of putting in their future child’s nursery. So of course… it had to be in a few photos ❤️

I hope to photograph more in home newborn sessions in 2024, so if you are in need of some, please reach out!

Thank you, Megan, Richard, and Eleanor, for letting me capture these snippets of life for you!

'Tis the season for family photos!

I loved photographing this family of three (almost four!) in celebration of this season that's coming down the pike for them! They chose one of my favorite spots... Historic Harmony! And it was all decorated for Christmas, which made it all the more fun!

Congratulations to this sweet family on their soon-to-be extra addition!

Portraits for The Perfect Piece in Zelienople, PA

The Perfect Piece is a used furniture store located in Zelienople, PA. Ownership for the store recently changed hands, and the new owners (Robin & Melinda) invited me to come and take a few portraits of them in their space (along with a few photos of them with the previous owners!).

This was such a sweet time! Robin is a long time friend of mine (who actually has assisted me with quite a few sessions in the past - so you might recognize her if you’ve had a senior session with me!), and it was such a joy to see this new venture come to fruition for her.

The store has lots of beautiful furniture, so we had a lot to work with in terms of portrait spots! As someone who usually photographs seniors, weddings, and families, this was a fun change of pace.

And a someone who lives in Zelienople, it was so much fun to get to work with a local business in this way.

Congratulations on your new venture, Robin & Melinda! And congratulations to the previous owners (Nancy & Kelly) on their successful hand off!
