Lindsey & Brody: Butler Private Estate Wedding Photos

What a wedding day! Lindsey & Brody tied the knot in a beautiful garden & floral themed wedding day on Brody's grandfather's property this past weekend, where his parents were also married 26 years ago.

Lindsey & Brody met in middle school and have been together for many years - so this day has been a long time in the making! There were so many beautiful details incorporated into their day, including:

  • Lindsey’s veil, with the couple's initials and wedding date embroidered onto it

  • Lindsey's grandmother's ring, which served as inspiration for her own engagement ring (and served as her something old, borrowed, and blue!)

  • The florals, which included flowers from both Lindsey & Brody's birth months

Aside from all of the special details, this day had a few twists and turns. Honestly, this may have been one of the most eventful weddings I’ve ever photographed! And of course, the couple took all of these in stride. There were storms, power outages, and a fallen cake table (just to name a few - you won’t want to miss the photos we got of that! ;) ), but what really impressed me about Lindsey & Brody is how they kept their focus on water mattered most in the midst of it all.

Because this was such a beautiful and eventful wedding… this blog post is HUGE! There were so many photos that tell the story of the day that I just couldn’t bear to leave out. So get your scrolling finger ready for a workout!

It was truly a privilege to be a part of this wedding day! Thank you Lindsey & Brody for having us!

Brittany & Ian: Tropical Wedding Celebration at Pinehall at Eisler Farms

I knew from the moment I first chatted with Brittany & Ian that their wedding was going to be unique, colorful, and fun! And if you’ve been reading the blog for any length of time, you’ve probably noticed that I LOVE COLOR in photos! Their vibrant, tropical-themed wedding had an abundance of lush greenery, vibrant flowers, fresh fruit, and even some "tropical" rain storms that made us feel like we were shooting a wedding in the rain forest! ;) Okay, so, the random rain storms that came throughout the day weren’t anyone’s favorite part of the wedding, but we were able to still get some gorgeous photos while dodging the rain!

Other fun details you’ll see below include: pineapples galore - even in the bride’s bouquet and HAIR! (look closely and you’ll see what I mean!), as well as an antique shuttle bus (killer!), goats, and fireworks!!! Really and truly, this wedding had it all.

Congratulations on your marriage, Brittany & Ian, and thank you so much for letting me be a part of your beautiful wedding day!

Courtney & Matt: Succop Nature Park Engagement Photos

It is a JOY to be able to share this couple’s engagement photos and story - and it was even more of a joy to get to spend an evening with them at Succop Nature Park in Butler!

Courtney and Matt went to the same high school and were both involved in the band program. However, their paths didn’t cross until they were both invited back to that very same school to teach! After the band performed one night at Kennywood’s Fall Fantasy Parade, they both stayed after the Parade to go on some rides with a few other staff members - then rode back to the school in Matt’s car. They exchanged numbers at some point throughout the evening, and started talking from there… and never stopped!

Matt popped the question on March 13, 2021 - the one year anniversary of the day the world shut down, due to Covid. What a beautiful way to make the anniversary of something dark so much brighter! And now, these two are getting married next year, surrounded by their friends & family.

Courtney and Matt, I could not be more excited to be a part of your beautiful wedding day. Thank you so, SO much for the privilege of walking alongside you two during this season of your lives! ❤️

JHP Behind the Scenes 2020

Wow… what a year! 2020 will certainly be one for the books.

At the beginning of this year, all of us were unsure of many things. I, for one, was completely unsure of how wedding season (and portrait season!) would shake out. I had so many couples (for good reason!) postpone their wedding days in the spring and early summer, and I wondered if I would if I would have any clients at all. Would people be too nervous to go outside to have their photos taken? Would there be any sense of normalcy late summer/early fall when it came to events? Would I need to get another full time job?!

In all of the uncertainty, I was reminded of the incredible, unsuspecting ways that God provides. And provide he did! From random part-time jobs to an increase in senior sessions, God truly provided for every need - and gave me many, MANY opportunities to continue doing what I love, even in the midst of a pandemic.

This year, I got to photograph 13 AMAZING wedding days, and over 70 portrait sessions. I was able to start a little Etsy shop that I’ve been dreaming up over the past year (Beyond the Boardwalk), take on a few graphic design projects (which is what my degree is in!), and dove a little bit into the world of thrifting through Mercari and Poshmark (which I love!).

More than anything, this year, I learned the value of being truly grateful for every. single. thing. that God provides for me. We’re easily tempted to compare and wallow when we are not grateful, but when we see the continual goodness of God within every opportunity and praise him for it (something I am quite imperfect at), we live in a renewed perspective - and a much better one, at that!

To every couple, senior, mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, baby, and fetus who gave me the joy of photographing them during this strange year - thank you. Your support, your encouragement, and your love mean the world to me! I am so thankful for you!

Fallon & Seth: Preston Park Engagement Photos

Fallon & Seth: Preston Park Engagement Photos

She was in ninth grade, he was in tenth grade - and, after switching to a friend’s lunch period, Fallon noticed Seth, a tall boy in the grade above who she had never met before! Because they were both introverts, it took a while for them to begin talking, but finally began doing so after school basketball games where Seth played, and Fallon cheered. They hit it off - and in May of 2018, Seth asked Fallon to marry him! And here we are, summer of 2019, taking their engagement photos at Preston Park in Butler, PA!

This location wasn’t a random choice for their engagement photos, though - Preston Park is a spot this pair has frequented since high school, and it holds so much special meaning to them, as it’s been home to countless walks and conversations throughout their relationship together!

Fallon and Seth - you are an incredible pair! It’s so easy to see your love and admiration for each other - and that you’re truly best friends! I cannot wait to celebrate you two on your wedding day next year!!! 💛

Reva & Alex: Succop Nature Park Wedding Photos

Reva and Alex’s wedding day took place at Succop Nature Park, one of my favorite outdoor venues north of Pittsburgh! They came all the way from Philadelphia to celebrate this new chapter of their lives with their friends and family!

Everyone was watching the forecast the day of Reva and Alex’s wedding. With almost everything planned to take place outside (aside from the reception under a pavillion!), Reva, her four sisters, and her soon to be sister-in-law paced around the bridal suite, watching the forecast, hoping things would change so Reva and Alex could have their dream outdoor ceremony.

After seeing a break in the rain coming 45 minutes after the ceremony was set to begin, Reva and Alex’s incredible planner from Your Big Day made the call to wait it out to see if there would be a break in the weather. And low and behold - there was!!! And we ended up having just enough time for an outdoor ceremony and for some photos before the rain began again. (Side note: this is why wedding planners are worth every penny!!!)

But the rain? It didn’t put a damper on the wedding day, and it surely didn’t put a damper on Reva and Alex’s excitement! The newly married couple radiated joy, even through the rain. Congratulations on your wedding day, Reva and Alex! 🎉

Can I be a Wedding Photographer if I'm an Introvert?

Can I be a Wedding Photographer if I'm an Introvert?

When I was in middle school, I didn’t have many friends. It’s not because I didn’t want to have any friends – I was just painfully shy. I could barely look people in the eye, let alone hold a conversation with them, no matter what age of whoever I was “holding” a conversation with.

Because I have natural tendencies towards introversion, I used to limit myself – a LOT. I told myself I couldn’t be a leader, and that I could never EVER do things where the attention was solely on me. I specifically remember telling myself that there was no way I could EVER own a business, because who would want to work with an introvert? People LOVE extroverts and their big personalities – why would someone choose to work with me if they could work with them?

But that’s the funny thing about life. Sometimes what we perceive as a weakness can actually be a strength. Towards the end of my high school years, I started challenging myself to simply just love on people – THAT is something I could do, regardless of the personality type I had. I realized that my introverted-ness couldn’t be an excuse for not having any friends, or not getting where I wanted to be in life – so I started simply finding ways to love on and listen to the people around me.

In wedding photography, there’s a bit of a bent towards people who are extroverted. Introverts see them as having the upperhand (or so I’ve seen with some of my introverted friendtographers), but I wanted to share three tips for introverts who might be struggling with being an introverted wedding photograph. I am by no means an expert in this, but if what I share can help someone else, I’m all for it. So here are my top tips:

1.  Ask a LOT of questions – good ones.

Upon first meeting me, some people mistake me for an extrovert. Sometimes, my introverted tendencies are disguised by my love for asking questions. It’s SO easy to keep a conversation going, even if small talk isn’t your “thing,” by asking questions. But the catch is – they have to be genuine, and they have to require more than“yes” or “no” response. And at a wedding, there are so many friends and family members of the couple coming together that there is always a plethora of good questions to ask!

2.  Be an excellent listener.

When you ask a question, make sure to listen to the response. This may sound quite obvious, but you’d be surprised at how many people forget to listen to the answer to the question they just asked, simply because they’re trying to think of the next question or how they’re going to respond. Asking a follow up question or clarifying a point from what the other person said is a great way to keep the conversation going and make sure you’re listening!

3.  Don’t hold back on dishing out compliments – but make sure they’re genuine.

This is one of my favorite strategies for making people feel comfortable when I’m taking their photo. Compliment the CRAP out of them! I love having the opportunity to encourage people, and, believe it or not, being in front of the camera can sometimes make even the most confident folks clam up a little bit. By genuinely complimenting whoever’s in front of your camera, you will automatically boost their self-esteem. But again – make sure your compliments are genuine, because we all know what it’s like to receive a compliment that isn’t really genuine! Keep it real by pointing out something specific, like: “I love the pattern on your dress!” or “your hair color looks perfect against this backdrop!” or “the way you just naturally tucked your hair behind your ear was perfect! Would you mind doing that again?” Anything that can build the confidence of the person in front of your camera is a great way to go!

4. Take the time you need to recharge.

Introverts tend to recharge their batteries (or refill their bucket) by having alone time, so make sure you get the alone time you need after a wedding or portrait session! This might mean unwinding by watching a movie, Netflix series, reading a book, or taking a nap. I personally love to come home and edit a few sneak peeks while I watch a show (usually the Goldbergs or How I Met Your Mother!).

If you’re an introvert chasing a dream, limiting yourself like I was – I challenge you to try putting each of these three tips into action to see if they make a difference for you! And as always, share any tips you might have in the comments below – you never know who needs to know what you have to say!

Why I Can't Define Myself as a Photographer

Why I Can't Define Myself as a Photographer

When you first meet someone, what's one of the first questions you ask them? You might ask for their name, and then possibly what they do for a living. I recently started reading a book called "The i-Factor" by Van Moody, and it's completely changed the way I think about my identity.

I've found that so often we forget that we are more than the sum of our parts. I might define myself as a photographer, but I'm not defined by what I do. I'm learning that if I tie what I do too closely to who I am, I lose myself. And if what I do for a living ever changes - I'm in for a MAJOR life crisis.

I’m not defined by what I do. If I tie what I do too closely to who I am, I lose myself.

I'm learning that I'm not just "Jenna the photographer." I'm Jenna - an encourager, someone who looks for the best in people, and someone who cares deeply about helping others feel loved. Those things won't change, and they can be carried with me into whatever I do.

Now - don't get the wrong idea here, I have absolutely NO intentions of quitting photography. In fact - just the opposite. I recently left my part-time job to pursue this crazy dream full time! But in that decision came fear - fear of losing part of who I was because I was giving up something I love almost as much as photography. But really - knowing who I am and defining myself apart from what I do is one of the first steps towards having the confidence to succeed!

I share this in hope to encourage anyone else who's chasing a dream out there, however big or small, and however far along in the process you are. Whatever you chase, be careful to define yourself by your "who" - then your "what" will fall into place.
